A Better Mainspring

People are known to possess certain inward and ruling passions. These motivate his doings as a mainspring runs a clock. Though the apostle Paul admonished the Corinthian Church to flee from idolatry, most people, if not all people, tend to idolize something. Regardless of the nature of that idolized, it is that which seems to both promise and deliver some sort of pleasure. Being aware of these things as he is, Satan discovers a person’s ruling passion, appeals to it with words, and launches a full-blown temptation in the effort to checkmate a man’s freedom of will and choice. James has warned us all that temptation occurs when one is dragged away and enticed by his own evil desires. The conception of lust brings forth sin, and the finished work of sin is spiritual death. For a man not to err, he must know and understand about himself what the tempter has always known. Overcoming Satan required a better mainspring.
