Those Who Become Wicked

It was approximately eight hundred sixty years before Christ that God sent the reluctant prophet Jonah to cry against the wickedness of Nineveh, the Assyrian capitol. Apparently to Jonah’s surprise, and even displeasure, the Ninevites repented with a fast, and covered themselves in sackcloth, while the king sat in ashes. Seeing their repentance, God turned from the destruction He would have brought upon them and did it not. About two hundred fifty years later, the prophet Nahum testified again of the destruction that would come upon Nineveh, declaring that the city’s wickedness had passed continually upon many, and there would be none to either bemoan or comfort the place. Between the prophecies of Jonah and Nahum, Ezekiel taught that the wickedness of the penitent who become righteous would not be remembered, but also not remembered is the righteousness of those who become wicked.
