The Sixth Commandment
The Twentieth of Exodus records ten basic commandments delivered by God through Moses unto Israel. The sixth of those is, “Thou shalt not kill.” So sacred is human life in the eyes of the God Who created it that He ordained that those who take another’s life without Divine and civil sanction would have their own lives taken with Divine and civil sanction. At the Twenty-First of Exodus, God decreed that if a man smote another that he died, he would surely be put to death. Nearly nine hundred years before the Mosaic Law, God had expressed the same principle following the flood of Noah. Though few would want to be the one to carry out the sentence, they that legally do so do not violate the Sixth Commandment.
