Ye shall walk in all the ways which the LORD your God hath commanded you, that ye may live, and that it may be well with you, and that ye may prolong your days in the land which ye shall possess (Deuteronomy 5:33).
Every Jewish child was to be taught that loving God above all else and keeping His commandments was primary. The “se-ma” or prayer of Israel was always: “Hear O Israel: The Lord our God is one Lord” (Deuteronomy 6:4). So vital was this concept that parents were to teach it to their children at all times (Deuteronomy 6:7).
It was also to be understood that loving God and keeping His commandments had a promise with them of a long and good life.
No greater life can be lived than the one that incorporates loving God and keeping his commandments. “And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments” (I John 2:3).
