Fit to Attach It
While Jehovah forbade the vain use of His Name in the swearing of oaths, this is not the only form of vanity about which we are cautioned. At the Fifteenth of Matthew, the Savior recalled His Father’s words delivered through Isaiah the prophet regarding those whose worship was vain. This was because they taught as doctrines the commandments of men. Paul the apostle wrote at the Third of Colossians that all things in word or deed must be in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, while that same Christ asked aloud why some called Him Lord while not doing the things which He said. It seems a vain use of the Lord’s Name to forge it upon that to which He Himself did not see fit to attach it.
