The Greatest Love
It has been observed that one can give without loving, but one cannot love without giving. Love seeks to be the benefactor of its object, and this results in giving, whether of physical necessities, moral and spiritual direction, or emotional support. The Third of John’s Gospel shows God to be the ultimate Benefactor of humanity, for He demonstrated His limitless love for humanity by the gift of His Son. The Fifteenth of John points out that the love of no one is greater than that of he who would sacrifice his life for another, while the Fifth of Romans notes how rare it is for such a sacrifice to be made for even the best of men. Because Christ died for His enemies and for sinners, the Lord not only gave the greatest benefaction but also the greatest love.
