Effective in the World

The Savior taught at the Thirteenth of Matthew’s Gospel that the Kingdom of Heaven was like unto leaven placed in three measures of meal until the whole was leavened. While we are not told the exact amount of leaven used, it was usually little when compared to that in which it was used. An ancient “measure” was about a peck and a half. So, three measures amount to four and a half pecks. The American peck is about eight quarts, so three measures, or four and a half pecks, amounts to thirty-six quarts, or nine gallons. That’s a considerable dry measure to be leavened by so little. However, the Kingdom, or the Church, is expected to be that influential and effective in the world.
