Before a Fall

Several persons are known in Scripture as Obadiah. Likely the most familiar of those is the prophet whom God sent as a messenger to the Edomites, or house of Esau. The prophecy seems to be a veritable exercise in the difference between reality and self-perception. Though the pride of their hearts had deceived them to believe otherwise, God had made them small and despised among the heathen. They imagined themselves to occupy a high habitation from which they could not be toppled. Yet, though they as the proverbial eagles they thought themselves to be were to make their nests as high as the stars, from thence the Lord would bring them down. As the Edomites had done with their lives, so it would be done unto them, and their reward would return upon their own heads. As Solomon wrote at the Sixteenth of Proverbs, pride goeth before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall.
