Raise Your Ebenezer
In his 1758 hymn, “o, Thou Fount of Every Blessing,” Robert Robinson wrote, “Here I raise my Ebenezer; hither by Thy help I’ve come.” The phrase is borrowed from First Samuel Seven where is recorded God’s deliverance of the Israelites from the Philistines. Samuel marked the place and occasion by the setting of a stone which he called “Ebenezer,” which translates as “stone of help.” Not only does the stone establish a permanent memorial, but also is representative of the strength of Jehovah Who hitherto has helped us. Times of need and trouble will come and come again; for which cause the strength and help of God should be remembered and never forgotten. Forget not also to raise your Ebenezer.
