Submission to God
In order to achieve that to which the Lord calls us, the Fourth of James tells us we must submit ourselves unto God and resist the devil. The latter is possible only when we have accomplished the former. This is because the Savior taught us at the Sixth of Matthew that no man can serve two masters and that each of us is serving one. While he who fails to make the conscious decision to serve God is serving Satan by default, He who has chosen to serve God has displaced the devil. Because submission to God amounts to the resistance of Satan, we can appreciate what Paul wrote at First Corinthians Ten about the temptations that are common to every man. Satan is Divinely prevented from overwhelming us, and the way to successfully resist and escape him is to be in submission to God.
