They Asked in Prayer

As the Ninth of Matthew’s Gospel comes to a close, the Savior is shown to have had compassion on the multitudes because of their spiritual weakness, and for their lack of spiritual leadership and direction. He saw this as a spiritual harvest waiting to be taken in, but for which the laborers were too few. The Savior told His disciples to pray for such laborers, and then, as Chapter Ten opens, he sends His disciples out to be just such laborers. The First of James teaches us that prayer must be offered in faith, while James Two teaches us that faith without works is dead. The Lord effectively taught these things to His disciples when He told them to pray for laborers, then sent them forth to do the work of the laborers for which they asked in prayer.
