Eternal and Spiritual
When a man offered to follow Jesus anywhere, the Savior indicated at the Ninth of Luke’s Gospel that keeping such a commitment might require the forfeiture of comforts. Another potential follower was essentially told that a spiritual mission in life would require his sense of priorities to be rethought and adjusted. A third man was told that following Christ required a commitment from which a man should never look back. In none of these three cases did the Savior attempt to discourage anyone from following Him. Rather, each was being prepared to undertake a new spiritual mission in life with as much success as possible. People are known to make extensive preparation for that which is but temporal and mundane. How much more important it is that preparation be made for the eternal and spiritual.
