The Wiles of the Devil

During the Israelite conquest of Canaan, the Tenth of Joshua records the alliance of the Gibeonites with Israel. Knowing of Israel’s defeat of Ai and Jericho, five kings and their armies became united in an attempt to defend themselves. When this five-member alliance attacked Gibeon, Joshua mobilized the Israelite army and smote them. As they fled from Israel, Jehovah destroyed more of them with a hail storm than had fallen in battle. God had declared unto Joshua that not a man of them would stand before him, and Joshua, in turn, assured his army that God had delivered them into their hand. The battles of Israel in the course of inheriting their land of promise are typical of the struggles of each of us in the course of reaching our promised land as well. As the Lord fought for Israel and gave them victory, so also does the apostle Paul admonish us at the Sixth of Ephesians to be strong in the Lord and the power of His might, putting on the whole armor of God to stand against the wiles of the devil.
