Worse and Worse

The book of First Samuel tells us of the attempts of King Saul to murder David in a jealous rage. At chapter Twenty-One, David fled to Ahimelech, the High Priest at Nob, and received of him food and the sword of Goliath. When Saul heard of this, he was angered that the priests had not informed him of David’s presence there. Consequently, Saul ordered the deaths of eighty-five priests, though Abiathar, the son of Ahimelech, managed to escape and find refuge in David’s company. “He that seeketh my life,” David said to Abiathar, “seeketh thy life.” A similar thought was conveyed to the Savior’s disciples at the Fifteenth of John, when He told them, “The servant is not greater than his lord. If they have persecuted Me, they will also persecute you.” As Paul wrote to Timothy, “All that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution, but evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse.”
