Quickening the Dead –
Everyone has likely been annoyed by a “hangnail. ” The annoyance may be exacerbated by the pain and bleeding that results when one attempts too aggressively to remove it. This is because one has reached the “quick, ” or the portion of the tissue that is alive. Paul the apostle makes a similar use of the word at the Second of Ephesians, where, beginning Verse One, he wrote that the Lord had quickened former sinners who had been dead in trespasses and sins. Spiritual death is separation from God, and it is sin that causes that separation. Removal of sin by the sacrificial blood of Christ restores union with God, and, therefore, restores also spiritual life. Therein is the “quickening” to which Paul referred. Further, there is no one who has not been in need of such a spiritual quickening, for the text continues to point out that all have, in one manner or another, succumbed to the lusts of the flesh. Yet, God has made it possible for those dead in sins to be quickened together with Christ, and thereby shows forth the exceeding riches of His grace.
