Built Up and Perfected

At the Fourth of Ephesians, Paul wrote of five abilities with which men were spiritually gifted in the first century. These included apostles, prophets, evangelists, pastors, and teachers, and each of these roles was intended to convey in some manner the Word of God. Paul then listed three things those teaching roles were intended to accomplish, including the perfecting of the saints, the work of the ministry, and the edifying of the Body of Christ, which is the Church. “Edify” is borrowed from the architectural and building professions and has reference to the constructing of a structure. Particularly if the finished product is rather magnificent, it might be referred to as an “edifice.” We know of nothing on earth more magnificent than the Lord’s Church, and it is by the Word that it is built up and perfected.
