What it Means to Be Quickened –
You have, no doubt, at some time been annoyed by a hangnail. You may have been more annoyed still when, as you attempted to remove it, the hangnail “went to the quick. ” It may have both bled and smarted because the “quick” is where the tissue is alive and sensitive. The word “quick” is similarly used in Scripture. At the Second of Ephesians, Paul the Apostle tells his readers that they were “quickened” who were dead in trespasses and sins. To paraphrase, they had been given renewed spiritual life who had been spiritually dead as a result of sin. Death, whether natural or spiritual, involves a separation. The Second of James teaches us that the body is rendered dead when the spirit is separated from it. That is natural death. The Sixth of Romans teaches us that death is the wage of sin. That is spiritual death, and it is separation from God. The Third of Colossians declares Christ to be our spiritual life. To be separated from the Source of life is to be spiritually dead. To be reconciled and united with Him Who is our life is what it means to be quickened .
