The Wiles of the Devil –
At the Twenty Fourth of Matthew’s Gospel, the Savior indicated that the destruction of Jerusalem would be preceded by wars and rumors of wars . To the Israelites, and to most every people before, during, and after their time, such a thing would be the essential normal order of the world. Their history had been replete with military conflict. As the elect of God was redefined to be the spiritual seed of Abraham rather than the physical, we realized also the fulfillment of the Savior’s words to Pilate, “My Kingdom is not of this world: if My Kingdom were of this world, then would My servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is My Kingdom not from hence.” Though the boundaries of terrestrial nations had been obtained and maintained by physical warfare, the Kingdom of Christ is obtained by the victory of Christ on our behalf over sin, death, hell, and the grave. The place of the faithful in it is maintained by the warring of a spiritual warfare. As Paul taught the Ephesian Church, “Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. ”
