Grace unto the Humble

The Savior taught at the Twenty-Third of Matthew that the self-exalted would be abased, but the humble would be exalted. This perhaps is no more true than in the case of Haman as recorded in the Book of Esther. Having been promoted by the King of Persia to a seat above all the princes, Haman was offended when Mordecai would not bow and reverence him as did others. Haman reacted with a plot to exterminate all Jews from the land and to publicly hang Mordecai. Queen Esther, the cousin of Mordecai, intervened, and Haman was hanged on the same gallows he had intended for the execution of Mordecai. He who had been so openly exalted by another exceeded so in vanity that he appears to have exalted himself even further. His public death was a far greater shame than his promotion. As Peter and James will both attest, God resisteth the proud but giveth grace unto the humble.
