Without Blemish

Scripture has often listed at length and in detail the lineages of numerous generations of humanity. Because Scripture is given by inspiration of God, the parentage of none of these may be doubted. That virginity at marriage and honorable conception and birth were important to the ancients is evidenced at the Eighth of John’s Gospel, when the Savior’s critics exclaimed, “We be not born of fornication.” Even so, no birth has ever possessed a greater assurance of honor than that of the promised Messiah, and the testimony of the virgin Mary conceiving of the Holy Ghost is that of the same God, for Whom lying is an impossibility. The Savior born of a virgin gave Himself for the Church, and the Fifth of Ephesians compares marriage to the Lord’s relationship with it. Purity as that of a virgin is achieved by the cleansing and sanctification the Lord performs upon it, that it should be holy, and without blemish.
