But these are written, that ye might believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God; and that believing ye might have life through his name (John 20:31).

John 20:30-31 form a powerful purpose statement for the entire book of John. The purpose of life is not to please ourselves but to please the Lord.

The passage emphasizes a standard to be respected. That standard is what is “written,” the very Word of God (2 Thessalonians 2:13-14). This verse also stresses an action to be obeyed. We must “believe.” The faith that saves is one that expresses itself in obedient action.

There’s more to consider. There is a gift to be received. Jesus alone gives “life” (John 10:10; 14:6). There are many people breathing who are not really alive, and it’s because they have not come to Jesus! Finally, there’s an authoritative Source to be trusted. Life is “in His name.” He is the King of kings, the very Son of God. Oh, the life that is to be found in Jesus!
