First of Those Fruits is Love
Because the product and legacy of a man’s life depend upon the spiritual condition of his heart, Solomon admonishes that the heart should be kept with all diligence. There is no better way to do this than the keeping of the first and greatest commandment to love the Lord with all the heart, as well as with all the soul, strength, and mind. Because nothing motivates a man more than his affections, such love for the Lord serves to dedicate a person to serve the Lord. Hence, the Savior taught that if we loved Him, we would keep His commandments. A person whose heart is filled with love for the Lord will also be filled with the fruits of the Lord’s Spirit. Interestingly, the Fifth of Galatians teaches us that the first of those fruits is love.
