Kingdom of Heaven is at Hand
It was at the Fortieth of Isaiah that the prophet wrote of the voice of him that cried in the wilderness, “Prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.” We see this prophecy fulfilled in John the Baptist, as all four gospels indicate. Though John did literally preach in the wilderness of Judea, his message of preparing for the Lord a highway in the desert seems to be a figurative reference to the barren spiritual condition of the hearts of sinful men. Because it is in the heart of man that the Savior dwells by faith, it is by repentance that the heart is made ready for the dwelling of Christ by the Spirit. For this cause, the primary focus of the preaching of John was to “repent, for the Kingdom of Heaven is at hand.”
