A Great Matter

James referred to the tongue as an unruly evil, full of deadly poison, and that no man could tame it. If he could, he would be a perfect man who was able to bridle his whole body. It is little wonder, then, why all have sinned and come short of the glory of God. The small bit controls a powerful horse, and a helm directs the course of a great ship; and then there is the tongue which, though small among the body’s members, has been a fire ignited by hell itself, and which, in turn, has been known to set ablaze the course of nature. Able to tame beasts and birds, mankind has proven unable to tame his tongue. Though it be a little member, the tongue boasts great things and kindles a great matter.
