Faith of the Elders

The Eleventh of the Hebrew Epistle records sixteen persons by name who are set forth as examples of faith. Many more examples are referenced, but whose names are not given. The Hebrew audience, unto which the epistle was written, would likely have been familiar with those whose names were given, for their histories were pertinent portions of the Patriarchal and Mosaic Dispensations. If any would be set forth as examples of faith in the Christian Dispensation, they must follow the examples of faith which went before them. Faithfulness under the Law of Moses stressed trust in Jehovah, but with a greater emphasis on perfectly keeping the Law. In Christ there remains the importance of faith in the Lord, coupled with the understanding that it is grace that saves us, and that is through          the avenue of faith. Whether it be the faithful of the Patriarchal, the Mosaic, or the Christian ages, all have one thing in common; God reckoned their faith as that faith was indicated by obedience to Him.
