No Other Gods Before Me

It is ironic that ancient Athens should have been considered a place of learning where both the locals and the visitors spent their time in nothing else, but to either tell or hear some new thing. The irony lay in the fact that Paul, at the Seventeenth of Acts, repeatedly referred to their religious practices and beliefs as ignorant. In fact, the Greeks recognized an almost countless number of gods and goddesses. It may be for fear that they had overlooked one that an altar in Athens was dedicated to the unknown god. Among the things of which they appeared to be ignorant was Divine ordinance forbidding what had become the very core of their religious culture. More than fifteen hundred years prior, God had commanded, “Thou shalt have no other gods before Me.”
