Spiritual Serendipity

To have the good fortune of discovering that for which one did not seek is known as “serendipity.” It may well happen when one is busy with another task or is seeking something else. Under those circumstances, serendipity will not come our way if we never begin the other task or never seek that missing item. For example, the Eighth of Luke records Jairus, a ruler of the synagogue, coming to the Savior to beg for the healing of his terminally ill daughter. As the Lord was on His way to Jairus’s house to do so, He encountered also a woman who had suffered twelve years from the same malady. Having healed her, the Savior continued to the house where the child He had come to heal had died. Rather than heal her, He raised her, no doubt silencing those who scorned Him. While going to heal a child, He healed a woman and then brought again the child to life. One might say our Lord enjoyed that day some spiritual serendipity.
