A Resolution Kept

It is at the Twenty First of Matthew’s Gospel that the Savior told a parable of a man with two sons. He asked one of them to go work in his vineyard. The son refused, but later repented and did as his father asked. The second son was also asked by his father to go work in the vineyard, and agreed to do so. However, he never went. The Savior asked the chief priests and elders of the people which of the two did the will of his father. When they correctly answered that the first son was ultimately the obedient one, Jesus told them that the publicans and harlots would enter the Kingdom before any of them. This is because the publicans and harlots repented at the preaching of John the Baptist, while the chief priests and elders did not. Though they occupied the offices of the spiritual leaders of the day, their deeds belied both their position and any claim to it. A resolution is highly regarded only if it is a resolution kept.
