For I am the LORD your God: ye shall therefore sanctify yourselves, and ye shall be holy; for I am holy: neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth (Leviticus 11:44).

The Law of Moses stipulated that certain animals were unclean to the Israelites. There were some creatures that they could not touch, or eat, or even sacrifice. God made these laws for His people for two reasons. The first was to help them learn that obedience is specific and at times demands attention to God’s details. The second was to keep them healthy and safe during their sojourning, before man’s greater knowledge of the physical dangers associated with certain animals.

God knows what is best for His highest creation (Jeremiah 10:23). When we keep His laws, we not only learn to love Him,
but His commandments protect us from harm.
