The Master’s Table
Apparently seeking to discredit the Savior, the Pharisees asked His disciples why He was having dinner with publicans and sinners. The Lord answered the question Himself by pointing out that it was sinners He came to save. This, He said, would be accomplished not by the sacrifices offered under the Mosaic law, but by Divine mercy. It is the sick that benefit from the physician, not they that are whole, and the Savior invited His critics to go and learn the meaning of these things. Had they done so, they would have discovered themselves to be the spiritually ailing sinners needing the mercy of the Great Physician and would have perhaps sought a seat for themselves at the Master’s table.
