Location of Capernaum
Though the Savior was born in Bethlehem, He matured in Nazareth. It was there, in the synagogue, that He revealed Himself to be the fulfillment of Messianic prophecy. Those hearing this were filled with anger, and threw Him out of the city, and attempted to kill Him by throwing Him off a cliff. Later, the Lord went to dwell in Capernaum. There, He rebuked the people, saying that the wicked city of Sodom would have remained had they seen the mighty works which had been done in Capernaum. For this, in their self-exaltation, they would be cast down to hell. It is no wonder that the Savior observed that a prophet has no honor in his own country. This may also be why, to this day, archaeologists cannot identify the exact location of Capernaum.
