Not from Hence

On the evening of His betrayal and arrest, the Savior resorted across the brook Cedron and unto a garden. When a band of men and officers came to bind Him and lead Him away, the Eighteenth of John records that Peter drew his sword and smote off the right ear of Malchus, the servant of the high priest. Jesus rebuked Peter’s attack, while Luke Twenty-Two tells us that the Lord touched and healed Malchus’ ear. While we cannot be certain whether Malchus should be grateful Peter’s swordsmanship was so expert that he wounded only his ear or so poor he failed to strike a more critically vulnerable target, we know he can be grateful for the Savior’s merciful and compassionate healing. Malchus could also be grateful for what the Lord uttered before Pilate, “My Kingdom is not of this world: if My Kingdom were of this world, then would My servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is My Kingdom not from hence.”
