The Twenty-Ninth of Genesis tells us of seven years Jacob worked in order to receive Rachel as his wife. Deceptively, Jacob’s father-in-law gave him Rachel’s elder sister, Leah, instead, claiming the younger could not marry before the elder according to the custom of the land. Jacob later received Rachel also, but had to labor another seven years for her. Jacob loved Rachel more than Leah, and the latter knew this and supposed that because she bore him six sons and a daughter, he would love her as much. Regardless of her efforts, Leah knew what it was like to be relatively unloved. On the other hand, we who can do nothing to merit the love of the Heavenly Father have received His love in abundance just the same. At the Second of Ephesians, Paul the apostle wrote, “…God, Who is rich in mercy for His great love wherewith He loved us, even when we were dead in sins, hath quickened us together with Christ…”
