Off the Face of the Earth
At the Fifth of Ephesians, Paul the apostle used the marital relationship of a man and his wife to illustrate the relationship of Christ to the Church. A husband is to love his wife as Christ loves the Church, and a wife is to be subject to her husband as the Church is to be subject to Christ. At the Third of Jeremiah, God also used marital terms to describe Israel’s unfaithfulness to Him. The sins of the people were figuratively described as a commission of adultery, and the Lord’s response to it was just as figuratively a bill of divorce with which He put them away. If the people embraced other gods, Jehovah warned that His jealousy would kindle unto anger, and He would destroy them from off the face of the earth.
