Not We Ourselves

The First of Daniel records the besieging of Jerusalem by King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. By the King’s specifications, there were to be brought to Babylon certain of the children of Israel who were well favored and without blemish and who were of knowledge, wisdom, cunning, skill, and understanding. Among those selected was Daniel, whom the King wished to nourish with his own meat and wine to prepare him for service. However, after refusing the King’s meat in favor of vegetables and water, Daniel appeared more healthy than those enjoying the royal provisions. It had been Daniel’s lifestyle and faithfulness to God that had made him what he was while yet in Judah, not anything that could be offered to him by Nebuchadnezzar nor anyone else. As David expressed at Psalm One Hundred, “…the Lord is God: it is He that hath made us, and not we ourselves.”
