They which builded on the wall, and they that bare burdens, with those that laded, every one with one of his hands wrought in the work, and with the other hand held a weapon (Nehemiah 4:17).
God’s children are to be builders and defenders of good things. In constructing the wall of Jerusalem, each man assumed responsibility to build and defend the wall. Both duties were essential if God’s purposes were to be accomplished.
What was true in Nehemiah’s day is true today. There are good things that Christians must build and good things that Christians must defend. Neither building nor defending can be neglected to accomplish God’s purposes. The home must be built up, and yet the home must be defended. The church must be built up, and yet the church must be defended. Each child of God has been given the duty to build and defend the good things of the Lord.
