Knowing Not the Scriptures

At the Twenty-Fifth of Deuteronomy, Mosaic Law provided that the brother of a deceased and childless man was to marry his widowed sister-in-law, and that their first-born child was to be considered that of the deceased. At the Twenty-Second of Matthew, the Sadducees asked the Savior whose wife a woman would be in the resurrection if she had been married to seven childless brothers under that statute. Jesus told them that they erred by knowing neither the Scriptures nor the power of God. Sadducees disbelieved in the resurrection, and therefore disbelieved in a measure of God’s power. They failed to understand the terrestrial limits of marital duration, as well as the terrestrial and eternal reach of Divine Lordship. In all this, and more, they erred by knowing not the Scriptures.
