The great day of the LORD is near, it is near, and hasteth greatly, even the voice of the day of the LORD: the mighty man shall cry there bitterly (Zephaniah 1:14).
The “day of the Lord” is a phrase describing God’s judgment upon mankind. Zephaniah foretold that Judah would suffer for their sinful lives. Their judgment was near. The promise was soon fulfilled as the Babylonians entered their land and subjugated God’s people.
The New Testament refers to a day in which God will bring judgment upon mankind (1 Corinthians 1:8; 5:5). The God who created all will bring all things to an end in that last great day. Many will be caught unprepared (1 Thessalonians 5:2; 2 Peter 3:10).
God’s people of old ignored the Lord’s promise of judgment, and they paid a high price. May we prepare ourselves today to be found faithful in that last great day of the Lord.
