The Name of Christian
The Fourth of Luke’s Gospel records that it was at Nazareth that the Savior revealed Himself to be the fulfillment of Isaiah’s prophecy of the coming of the Lord’s Anointed One. However, it was also upon this same occasion that those who heard these things became so angry with the Christ that they ejected Him from the city and attempted to murder Him by casting Him off a cliff. Though this is not the only locale to witness a mass rejection of the Savior, the character demonstrated by the city’s inhabitants may be one of the reasons why Nathanael would inquire whether any good thing could come out of Nazareth. Though the Lord had been born at Bethlehem, it was at Nazareth that He grew and matured and came to be known as Jesus of Nazareth. As association with the Savior seems to improve the image of Nazareth, so also is a man significantly elevated when he gains the right to wear the name of Christian.
