Lay Aside All Guile
The apostle Peter admonishes his readers to lay aside all guile, for they who possess it are disposed to dishonesty and deceit. Eve blamed her sin on Satan, whom she said had beguiled her. Of the Savior, however, Peter wrote that no guile was found in His mouth. Nathanael, then, should have felt most complimented indeed when the Lord described him as an Israelite indeed, in whom is no guile. An honest man will generally take an honest approach to everything, and it is most important that he do so with regard to spiritual things. Nathanael’s spiritual objectivity caused him to accept the Savior’s prior knowledge of him as evidence of the Lord’s divinity. Peter points out that we are elect according to the foreknowledge of God. To accept that statement as a Christian evidence requires a person as guileless as Nathanael.
