Daily Lift – October 09, 2016

And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth (Luke 12:15).

Malcolm Forbes is said to have coined the phrase “He who dies with the most toys wins.” This has become the “axiom” by which many Americans live. Yet in the perspective of God it is not the abundance – the quantity nor the value – of things, but rather a spirit of meekness and service for God.

Covetousness that is warned against here is idolatry (Colossians 3:5).

Living to gain material possessions is a waste of one’s life. We ought to concentrate on laying up treasure in heaven (Matthew 6:20-21), and remember: “He who dies with the most toys – is still dead!”
