And he said unto his disciples, Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat; neither for the body, what ye shall put on (Luke 12:22).

In the first twenty verses of Luke 12, Jesus commanded His disciples, “Do not be afraid…Do not fear…Do not worry” (12:4, 7, 11). In verse 22, He gave three similar commands again, “Do not worry…Do not keep worrying…Do not be afraid” (12:22, 29, 32). A key to fulfilling these challenging commands is found in the first word of verse 22, “Therefore.”

“Therefore” points back to the first three commands and the Parable of the Rich Fool. Jesus challenged His hearers to be “rich toward God” (12:21). Rich toward God? How?

Remember what “life is” (12:23). Remember who “God feeds” (12:24). Remember what “God clothes” (12:28). Remember “your Father knows” (12:30). Remember “your Father’s good pleasure” (12:32). Stop trusting in self and trust in God, and you’ll be rich! Toward God!
