Daily Lift – September 19, 2015

Vanity of vanities, saith the preacher; all is vanity (Ecclesiastes 12:8).

Why is it that it takes so many of us so long to figure out that things in this life will never give us ultimate happiness and fulfillment? Why is it that so many today work long, hard hours to buy things that seem so essential at that particular time? Why do we buy inferior meaningless objects that we feel will satisfy our needs for pleasure in this life?

Solomon wrote the Book of Ecclesiastes as an old man after his many mistakes of “wine, women, and song.” Solomon examines some of the things that are perceived as meaningful in this life. After gaining all of these things, he lamented that these things were useless and would belong to someone else after his own death (Ecclesiastes 2:17-18).

Jesus asked the rhetorical questions about possessions in Matthew 16:26. Solomon reminds us that the conclusion of the whole matter (is this) “Fear God and keep His commandments, For this is the whole of man’” (Ecclesiastes 12:13).
