A Higher Calling –
The Second of Acts records Peter the Apostle preaching the first Gospel sermon following the ascension of Christ unto Heaven. The audience responded to Peter’s Spirit inspired words by asking what they should do. When they were told to repent and be baptized for the remission of sins, about three thousand of them became obedient to that Gospel and were added unto the Church. While we are encouraged by the record of so many whose obedience to the truth was so immediate, let’s look behind that a few years to the Fourth of Matthew, where Peter and his brother, Andrew, were busy at their profession as fishermen. The Savior called them to become fishers of men instead, and they straightway left their nets and followed Him. It would be unto these and their colleagues that the Lord would later give the commission to preach the Gospel to every creature. That preaching was to have its beginning in Jerusalem, and it was there that men from every nation under Heaven were given the opportunity to hear the Gospel in their own tongue wherein they were born. Peter stood up with the other apostles and gave that massive audience a chance to do what he had done years before; answer, and answer immediately, a higher calling.
