The God Who Gave It
Though the Genesis record tells us that God made man in His image, the Savior pointed out that God is a Spirit and that spirits do not have flesh and bones. When the Creator gave man the breath of life, man became a living soul. Having no heavenly origin, the body of man is formed of the dust of the earth. Separate from the spirit, the body is dead and returns to the dust from which it came. The spirit, however, is to return unto the God Who gave it. It is the spirit of a man that is made in the image of God, and it is the spirit of a man that is actually who he is and that is destined for an eternal existence. The spirit could not return to God unless it came from God, and one must be ready for his spirit to meet the God Who gave it.
