To Remain in Bondage

Click here for the audio version

Sarah, the wife of Abraham, bare no children for her husband prior to growing older than those who normally conceive. It was for this cause that she asked Abraham to take Hagar, Sarah’s Egyptian handmaid, to be his wife. Children born to Hagar would be regarded as Sarah’s under the custom of the day. Ishmael was born as a result, though Sarah laughed when the Lord revealed that she would bear a son of her own. Isaac was the result of the Lord’s promise. At Galatians Four, Paul the apostle used those events as an allegory, pointing out that God’s promise was not fulfilled in either Hagar nor Ishmael, as His promise was not fulfilled either at Sinai nor by the Law of Moses. Rather, as God fulfilled His promise to Abraham by Isaac’s birth by Sarah, so also hath He in Christ fulfilled His promise of freedom from the bondage of sin. To seek that freedom in any other message, or by any other doctrine, or in any other manner, is to remain in bondage.
