Hear me, O LORD, hear me, that this people may know that thou art the LORD God, and that thou hast turned their heart back again (1 Kings 18:37).
Contests abound in our sports-saturated world, but what about that contest on Mount Carmel? The great prophet Elijah challenged God’s people to make up their minds whom they would serve (1 Kings 18:21). At first they had no answer. However, the Lord powerfully answered Elijah’s pleading prayer with a demonstration involving fire and the people fell on their faces, not needing to search for words to praise God (v. 39).
Many such like events in the Old Testament benefit our weakness of faith and provide for us marvelous comfort that we might have hope (Romans 15:4).
Elijah’s God was powerfully convicting that day at Carmel.
