I am Alpha and Omega, the beginning and the ending, saith the Lord, which is, and which was, and which is to come, the Almighty (Revelation 1:8).
This is likely a reference to the Christ and serves somewhat like a title and also a signature of Jesus. “Alpha and the Omega” comprise of the first and last letters of the Greek alphabet, which is also seen the descriptions “beginning and ending” (v. 8) and “first and the last” (v. 17). Jesus is essentially the beginning, ending, and everything in between (Colossians 1:15-19).
Throughout Scripture, we are able to see the second member of the Godhead at work in creation and salvation’s plan. This self-proclaimed title reminds us of the authenticity of this letter and its whole message of faithfulness and victory in Jesus, the one “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”
