Idolatry has always been a fascination. Isaiah mocked idolaters by observing how they gather wood, burn some for heat, and create their God with the other (Isaiah 44:14-20). The psalmist wisely observed that “They which make them are like unto them” (Psalm 115:8). That is the key to understanding idolatry. Men do not like the requirements and restraints Jehovah places on them, so they create their own gods – gods made after their own images. Such a god never disagrees with its creator.
The one true God has never been led about like an idol. His ways are not my ways. His thoughts are not my thoughts (Isaiah 55:8). The salvation He offers is both the expression of His grace and a plan requiring obedience.
Pray with me, “Father, today help me to be obedient with a simple, childlike faith.”
