Glorify God
At the age of twenty years, Israelite young men were considered ready to become soldiers. It may have been for this reason that the three eldest of Jesse’s sons went to battle while the youngest, David, remained at home to tend his father’s sheep. When David brought supplies to his brothers and their captain, he was appalled to witness the Philistine giant Goliath taunting the Israelite army, and his challenges going unanswered. Though David’s brothers accused him of being no more than a proud and naughty kid who had come to see the battle, David successfully answered Goliath’s challenge, slaying the giant and facilitating an Israelite victory. What King Saul and his army saw as an insurmountable challenge, David saw as an opportunity to glorify God.
